Review: | "Teachers looking for a clear and well-organized introduction to the Impressionist Movement would do well to consider this program. The main topics, which include What Is Impressionism?, How Impressionism Began, Impressionist Techniques, Impressionist Artists, and the Evolution of the Revolution: After Impressionism, are well-defined and delineated. There are brief biographical profiles of artists such as Monet, Manet, Renoir, Pissaro, Degas, Morisot, Cezanne, and Cassatt. Illustrative works are identified by title and artist. The differences in content and style between traditional Salon painters and the Impressionists are reinforced at various points in the video, with attention to artistic technique. Unfamiliar terms are introduced and explained, such as pointillism, plein aire, and peinture claire. Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, and Matisse are also briefly discussed as a bridge from the Impressionist to Post-Impressionist Schools. Production values are good, employing documentary film footage, photographs, slides, and video to present a definition of Impressionism and an overview of its major artists. Narration alternates between a male and female voice, and background music changes theme appropriately. Title graphics and transitions are interesting and will maintain student interest. The video provides a useful introduction for art students, as well as for social studies and language art s teachers wishing to enrich their curriculum."
