Review: | All About the Weather is one of the most comprehensive instructional videos on the subject for elementary students. Youngsters who master all the definition and material presented will have a solid foundation in every aspect of weather and climate. The video is narrated by a single female voice with some very soft background music. She opens with an overview that explains exactly what material will be covered in the video. Brief, colorful graphics and film clips illustrate the various concepts and topics under discussion. There is a constant display of words and definition on the screen, but there is no pause in the script for discussion at the time of presentation. Students will not have time to copy the definitions, and some younger students will not be able to read the entire definition unless the video is paused. This is not a negative because the fast pace means that children do not lose focus or interest. Some of the terms defined, such as altostratus, are difficult for primary grade students. Teachers can either compile a list of definitions and distribute them to students before showing the video, or pause the tape if they wish to have the students read/copy the written definitions. All About the Weather concludes with a discussion of storms. The explanation and illustration of each type of storm will hold students? attention as the power of tornadoes and hurricanes are present onscreen. Although designed for the elementary grade, this excellent video could be utilized in middle school science classes as well.
