Description: |
Designer drugs, often described as 'club drugs,' are a class of illegal drugs that are designed in clandestine laboratories. Like some fictional 'Frankenstein' creature concocted by a mad scientist, these synthetic drugs can 'strike back' at its users by causing physically and emotionally damaging effects that can even result in death. In this program, students will learn exactly what designer drugs are as well as become introduced to some types of designer drugs that are recreationally abused. The association that designer drugs have with the Rave and club scenes will also be explored. In the end, viewers will be exposed to safety methods for 'surviving' a Rave and staying away from the grave.

Review: | Designer drugs associated with the club scene and teen use and abuse are explored in this instructional program. Information is presented in six sections, each introduced in colorful animated graphics. Narrator Thomas F. Soare, PhD, narrates over scenes of ethnically diverse male and female dancers, close-ups of users, and scenes of illegal drug factories. The first part defines designer drugs, which are many times the original strength of their parent drug. The next segment shows and describes six drugs - Ecstasy, GNB, Ketamine, Rohypnol, Methamphetamine (Speed), and LSD-many of which are difficult to detect when added to beverages. Section 3 covers the origin and history of all-night dances known as raves and the club scene popular with high school and college students. The next segment details the effects of using these drugs, such as increased heart rate, respiratory distress and failure, damage, and death. The dangers of mixing designer drugs with alcohol and other drugs are covered. The emotional details of designer drugs are detailed in the next part. The final section presents strategies for avoiding designer drugs. The message at the end of this sobering, informative video is: 'Make the choice to be the designer of your own dreams rather than let someone do it in a laboratory. Make the choice to embrace life.' This well-organized and engaging program provides information to help teens make informed choices.
