Review: | "Teens are pulled in many directions with the pressures of schoolwork, jobs, and relationships. In addition, many live in single-parent families or households where both parents work, so they share the burden of domestic chores and care of younger siblings. Still others strive for top grades, participate in extracurricular activities, hold leadership positions, and excel in sports and the arts. Concerned with doing everything well, these high achievers can suffer from chronic response syndrome, a belief that the success of all their endeavors rests on their shoulders. With all the stress teens face, it is not surprising that many suffer from burnout. Left untreated, this can lead to rage, depression, drug use, and even suicide. Ethnically diverse teens enact realistic scenarios as they demonstrate common symptoms of stress (i.e., restlessness, emptiness, frustration, moodiness, exhaustion, impaired judgment, health problems, feelings of failure, despair and withdrawal) and explain their causes. Although most of the households depicted are traditional and appear to be more supportive than many real-life families, the material itself is timely and offers a variety of coping techniques for stressed-out teens. A worthwhile purchase for middle and high school psychologists, guidance counselors, and health teachers."
