Review: | "Teenagers are given tips on the rules that govern effective writing in this straightforward and informative video. An adult narrator addresses the importance of proper grammar, usage, and style, while teenagers illustrate each example in live-action scenarios. Few examples of bad grammar are shown. Little time is devoted to usage, other than a reminder to avoid using fragments, slang, or informal English. Likewise, mechanics such as punctuation, indentation, and capitalization are just given cursory attention. At the heart of this program are 11 principles of style that are not always based on hard and fast rules, but are valued as guidelines for good writing. The slow and clear voice of the narrator effectively explains each principle, such as the use of modifiers or the subtlety of good sentence patterns, while teenagers engaged in daily activities provide an example for each one. The video draws its strength from these illustrations meant to provide relevance to teen viewers. Parallel construction, active voice, positive statements, and connotation and denotation are some of the other principles of style included. Graphics are used throughout to outline, to reinforce vocabulary, and to list examples of sentences, clichés or transitional phrases. Techno-style music is low-key and graphics are conservative enough not to detract from the lesson. This video will be a valuable review for students who are about to begin a writing exercise."
