Review: | "Many students needlessly struggle through school because they do not know how to read effectively when studying. This marvelously organized video presents a clear, concise plan for student reading success. Thomas Soare's narration is authoritative and warm. The program is divided into six sections: Preparing Your Mind for Reading, Determining Your Reading Objective, Schedule Reading to Match Your Attention Span, Learn to Recognize Organizational Methods, Learn to Read Actively, and After You've Finished Reading. Much of the content is a slight reworking of the SQ3R method and other study and organizational tips. Preparing to Read explains why studying on a bed or in a comfortable chair is not a good idea. Reading to Match Your Attention Span makes students aware that studying should be done only as long as they are able to absorb the information. Schedule Your Reading to Match Your Attention Span demonstrates how to measure the length of your attention span and optimize study time by taking short breaks. Racially diverse students demonstrate the techniques described. On occasion, the background music, "The Peer Gynt Suite," distracts viewers from the narration. this production could be used in classrooms and media centers by groups or individual students. While reading skills are specifically addressed, it is actually a neat little presentation on how to study in general." SOURCE: School Library Journal, December 2000 Issue AUTHOR: Michael C.
