Review: | "We have all seen the typical mixed messages in the media - while models get thinner and thinner, portraying an ever-shrinking idea of 'perfection,' we are bombarded with advertisements for fast food restaurants and junk food. We are supposed to eat more, but stay thin. In response, more and more teens (especially girls and young women) are suffering from eating disorders. This video discusses the causes (pressures from society, unresolved emotional problems, genetic predisposition), symptoms, and forms of treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and compulsive overeating. The overall visual is not a pretty one. While a female host explains the factual information, teens are shown stuffing their faces, vomiting, looking woefully at themselves in mirrors, and being depressed. Much important and valuable information is shared, including stressing the fact that people suffering from these disorders will die if left untreated. Warning signs for friends and family, what physically happens to the body, and scary statistics are also provided. At the end, contact information for the National Eating Disorder Association and Overeaters Anonymous are listed. The only drawback of this film is the numerous times that the actors portraying teens with eating disorders are shown with their heads in the toilet. However, this harsh view might be just what teenagers need to grab their attention and help to make them understand the seriousness of these disorders."
