Description: |
Steroid abusers are often lured by the promises of athletic success and a 'beefed-up' body. As a result, young people who are looking for a short cut to the winner's circle or for an enhanced physical appearance may give in to the temptation to abuse steroids. In this eye-opening presentation, we will define and describe steroids, and then explore the reasons why people abuse these drugs. Associated health risks that accompany steroid abuse will also be explained.

Review: | Gr 6-12 "The promise of anabolic steroids to make a body 'bigger, stronger and faster' is a lure that can have harmful health consequences for teens. Multicultural teens of both sexes are shown participating in sports, lifting weights, and dramatizing scenes in which steroids are being injected or taken orally. A male narrator presents vocabulary and information which is clearly outlined and fast paced. Graphic lettering reinforces facts as the narrator speaks over video clips that are realistic depictions of teen activities. Some diagrams are used to show how 'gym candy' and 'juice,' street names for steroids, affect the body negatively. Those who use steroids can experience hormonal imbalance or permanent cardiovascular or muscoskeletal damage. Abusers experience irritability, aggressive behavior, and difficulty sleeping. Treatment options include therapy to reduce psychological dependence, build self-confidence, and develop healthier choices for becoming fit. This no-nonsense program will be a valuable resource for high school athletics and health classes."
